Local mining tradition

The permanent exhibition on the Ridnaun site informs visitors about the local mining traditions. Personal items and private photo collections from the miners of the time and their families tell of life as a miner in the 19th and 20th centuries. Starting from the 1920s many came from the central Italian provinces. These migrant workers from the south encountered a totally alien world up on the main Alpine ridge. The home for the workers at the end of the valley became a sort of ghetto where they could maintain their own traditions. While many of the workers later returned home, some remained in the valley.
A special exhibition on the first floor is dedicated to the marking of mining claims, an engineering discipline involving the measurement of the galleries and ore districts. A mineral display room shows the diversity of the local mining and mineral landscape.
